I was just checking on my Technorati ranking this morning and I found myself with a nice low number. It's not as low as I would like it to be but I can't complain. There are some folks who would kill (or spam) for a ranking as low as mine.
What really got me thinking though is the number, 1991. What was I doing in 1991? What was going on in the world in 1991? Where you even alive in 1991? I was and I was already in the Army.
In the early half of 1991 I was in basic training. For most of the rest of 1991 I was stationed at Aberdeen Proving Grounds for my advanced training. I was busy learning all about the fire control systems on M1A1 tanks and Bradley Fighting Vehicles, among other things I'm not at liberty to discuss.
After graduation from advanced training I moved to Germany to enjoy my first duty assignment. I had a lot of fun in Germany and even ran into one of my good friends from advanced training over there.
Unlike some of the other trainees at Aberdeen my course was long and had very few students. I think they may have been four of us in my class. The training also lasted about 9 months. Some of the other students at school rotated in about in 8 weeks! Yep, being there for so long did have some benefits as the DIs were a bit nicer to you after a few months.
1991 was not just a year of good times though, there was also tragedy that year.
MY brother Rob and cousin Larry, who had taken part in Desert Storm and Desert Shield died in a single car auto accident. The accident occurred late one night while they were driving home.
I flew back home from training (and got bumped into the next class for missing so much time) to attend the double funeral. It was not a good time for my family. The only comedy (it was of a dark nature) was meeting all of my brother's fiances! He sure did get around.
I also got two tattoos in 1991 while living in Aberdeen Maryland.
1991 was an interesting year. I don't like to dwell on that year so, I would appreciate if you folks could help me out by lowering my Technorati rank with a few links headed my way!

Very nice man !!I am still on 10k +
No complaining allowed. I’m still way up there (or down there depending on how you look at it). I might get to where you are in like FIVE years.
1991 hmmmm…. That’s the year I was in Desert Shield/Storm/Calm and other stuff. I had already served 12.5 years when I returned to the U.S. Why, you be a yungin’!
Yep, I may be younger than you. That also means you will probably die first! shall I give you a hand on that one? ;)
This site is almost five years old. I registered the domain back in 2002.
See, I’m a good guesser (and no I didn’t check first).
I don’t know about dying first though. My dad’s 83 and still kickin’ (and survived WWII and as a POW for part of that).
I’ve got mixed results in grandparents. My mother’s side dies young (60s-70’s) while my father’s side lives forever (several over 100 years old).
You know what? Thanks for reminding me… that’s something I haven’t even touched on, on my blog.
Which thing might that be? You’re dying soon or the age of your site?
No, silly. You got me to mention my father. I haven’t talked about my father since… well, never.
First of all, I would like to sincerely thank you for serving our country in the Army. And my condolences on the loss of your brother and cousin, how tragic.
Secondly, that Technorati ranking is killer! Your Alexa ranking’s not to shabby either. I have the Alexa Search Status bar installed on my browser, so I can see Alexa, but everyone’s Page Rank shows up as 0/10. Very weird.
I did the PPP Technorati Faves Link list, and I put in 109 links, and so far have only got 39 linking to me. Have YOU favorited me yet?? LOL
The PR will show up as zero unless you are on my main domain “hmtk.com”. When you read a post you are in a “virtual” subdirectory called “archives”, this is a remnant of my old blog directory structure.
Yes, I will be adding you to my favs, I got behind on doing that when I got inundated with favs from different people. Becuase Technorati does not sort them by date some people fall through the cracks.
It’s always interesting to look back.
By any chance did you get the tatoos as symbols for your brother and cousin’s deaths? What are the tatoos of and the meaning of them to you?
I’ll have to post pics.
One of them is a memorial piece (M16 in the ground with a helmet on top) while the other is “the girl that will never leave me).
Guess they should have a minimum age for getting tattoos?
Ohh the M16 one sounds like it’s great..I thought there was a minimum age for tatoos..18 here in the states?
I was 18 when I got them. I probably should have been older!
Excellent work Steve. Guess it’s a pretty big benefit for contributing so much on JohnChow.
I’d like to invite you to take a look at my blog. It started out a bit shaky and I started promoting it before fully knowing what I wanted to do with it, but I’ve worked out the kinks now and have a pretty good idea on where I want to run with it.
