Is the WordPress Top Commentator plugin screwing up Technorati?
For a while now I have been slowly working my way up the Technorati ladder. When I first became aware of Technorati I had a ranking in the 90K range. Last week I broke into the 50K range. This morning I checked and found myself sitting at 15,955!
I'm sitting at this rank because 341 links from 213 blogs link to me. I would like it if Technorati had a tab that would just list the blogs and not the posts but they do not.
Looking through the blogs that link to me I see a sudden increase in blogs that use the top commentator plugin. This plugin adds a link to the page (I use it) for a certain number of top commentators. Funny things is that it adds it to EVERY page!
Because I am a top commentator on John Chow's blog I get a link back from a large number of his posts!
I just started reading Shoemoney and now I have three links from him. All because I left some comments.
As much as I enjoy the boost to my Technorati ranking I have to wonder if this is a good or bad thing.

Dunno if it’s good or bad, but I’m sure as hell gonna leave that John Chow character a piece of my mind :-D
Well it sure is weird having 30 RSS subscribers yet a Technorati ranking near 15K!
I noticed my rankings increased as well via my comments on your blog. I got a few extra links. While it’s nice to see a rise in ranking, I think of it as a “false positive.” I’d rather have real links.
Technorati takes this into account already. Not for this specific plugin, but for multiple links from a specific blog.
I’ve got a blog that has 60 links or so from 58 or so blogs and it ranks much higher than any of my other blogs that have many more links but from less blogs.
It’s one of the added benefits of the plugin, as they “trust you”, per se, but it doesn’t alter the rankings all that much.
Doesn’t alter? I went from 54K to 15K almost overnight because of the top commentator plugin!
At least that is what it looks like to me. If Technorati would give me a list of the blogs, and not the blog articles, that link to me I would be much happier!
If I had a ranking I would not know where to find it :) I am glad that really good bloggers get some recognition. We all have to be careful not to take too many ribbons for horseshoe tournaments or our Olympic medals will get lost in the pile though. You deserve your’s tho man, I actually read your stuff when I have time.
Keep going! Phil B.
I have a pretty abysmal Techno rating, so maybe I should start giving that Top Commentator a go. I’ve been reading some reviews of it and it seems like a good idea. Gotta set a good refresh/expiration rate on it though.
I noticed that I have a link from you that references your archives. Seems like the new archives plugin creates new links for Technorati as well. I am not sure how Technorati calculates it all. I figure that it does take the number of links from a single blog into account as Ryan suggested and as your linked blogs ranking increases, your rank increases along with it.
I have 33 links from 12 blogs at the current time and I’ve seen my ranking increase and decrease with nothing really changing with respect to links. Having your rank increase must’ve yanked mine along with it because I was in the 404K range last week and now I’m in the 342K range. Kinda funny but I started out around 1.6 million!
Having you speedlink to one of my posts sure helped!
Every page that gets referenced via Technorati has my top commentator links attached to it.
[...] at Ramblings from the Marginalized wrote a post wondering why his Technorati ranking went from 90,000 to 15,955 in a day. Now you know Steve. If anyone else saw a huge Technorati increase, you have me to [...]
Evil John did it. No wonder. I just checked, and my technorati rank is now higher than my “other blog” I mentioned above: it’s now ranked ~22k, while the other is still at ~62k.
Here I thought I had some major scoop and it was all John Chow! I’m glad I got on his top commentator spot before he pulled this trick.
I think that is both good and bad. The issue is whether or not the comments are good comments or just a blurb to get on the list.
I think you blog too little as it is.
