Barracuda Networks just released their yearly report on spam. How much spam do you get?
Here on hmtk.com I get well over 1,000 spam comments every day. Yes, I said every day. I also receive in excess of 250 spam emails every day. Yeah, that's a lot of spam!
It is not all bad though as I have been able to turn those junk stock pick emails into a business by posting them on one of my other sites with a little bit of commentary added in.
So, tell me, how much spam do you get and how do you deal with it?

Hmm. I dunno. Maybe 300 comment spams a day? I’m around 40K spams according to Akismet and I think I installed it around March of this year. I get plenty of email spams across all accounts. The comment spam is very freaky. The usual drug ones but some freaky stuff with animals. I do a quick scroll to make sure it’s all spam and yeesh. Does comment spam rally work?
I think it only works on unattended blogs.
Also, when stuff does not get caught by Akismet and ends up in my awaiting authorization area I just look for the most common keywords and add them to my “this is spam” list in the options->discussion area of wordpress.
I have seen blogs that link to mine and look like some type of auto-linking content site. Very odd. I am not sure why someone would build this type of blog. For example, I have those bathroom posts. Then I would see a link to it and follow it and it would be some bare bones site linking to any other blog that mentions toilets or bathrooms.
I can’t see how people would link on ANYTHING in a comment. Some comment spams are just long lists of links.
HEY! I am SO OUT OF IT. When did you change back to your original theme!
Yeah, I get those weird ones too where they pull part of your text and then link back to you.
The theme? A few weeks, maybe a month ago?
I don’t know how many spam comments I get on my blogs… I dont bother looking, or checking Akismet for false positives, I just leave them to be deleted.
Mails… Gmail does a good job of filtering spam, again, I dont bother looking at the spam folder unless something “go’s missing”… so again, it does not really bother me…
But… I am sure it bothers the mail servers…
Whew, that’s a killer :(
