The Gods of the Gnomes

The gods of the gnomes are very diferent from those of the humans. Thier main God is that of Herstut, more commonly refered to as the Earth Mother. She is reveared in much the same way surface dwellers rever the Earth Mother Lucretia. However, whereas surface dwellers look to her help in matters dealing with the lands under the sky, gnomes ask her assistance in matters underground.

Another important distinction of the gnomes is in the arena of gods. Whereas the gods of the humans are not in the least bit willing to work with one another, the gods of the gnomes are always willing to work with others of thier kind, in fact, gnomish gods only control one domain plus that of Earth which means their are always 21 gnomish deities in existance.

It has been noted as well that all of the current gnome deities were once living breathing mortals who challenged the powers of a god and proved themselves worthy to take his place. Upon challenging a god both the god and the challenger are put to three tests, as designed by Herstut. The winner of the three tests takes his place in the pantheon and the loser is returned to the world of mortals to be born anew.

Because of this, many gnomish texts will refer to a deity by a name that no longer exists, it is up to the reader to deduce the domain of power referenced in the work and then consult with the current pantheon to see who is realy being referenced.
