Wii still kicking ass but what is the PS3 doing?
I know some of the people on the interweb are real PS3 haters and anything that puts the PS3 in a favorable light is knocked around like the redheaded stepchild of a crack-whore but I got some news for you.
Once again I am going to post a chart from VGChartz with launch dates synchronized for the current three consoles (not handhelds).

Yeah buddy! The PS3 is STILL following the same sales trajectory as the Xbox360.
I know I'm going to be getting a lot of heat from people telling me that VGChartz is crap but you know what? It's one of the best things we got and if it's crap for one console than it is likely crap for all consoles. So there, take the above chart with a bit of crap. If that does not taste good enough throw some salt on it too.

so. you realize that, by this logic, everyone who says the ps3 is not a failure must also admit that the 360 is not a failure.
m3mnoch.
Steve,
Have you ever done a demographic of Wii versus 360 or other user post? I wonder sometimes why the Wii is so much more popular. My son had one and found it to be simplistic for his use – even if cool. I am just curious as to what age group this system is resident in most.
Always,
Phil
the wii appeals to children and seniors but not particularly that coveted 15 to 45 demographic. the 360 has a definite edge over the other two with games but its quality leaves much to be desired. ps3 is beginning to launch some great games with many more exclusives to come. 2 years from now it will be obvious to all that ps3 can do what the competition cannot. developers are beginning to understand how to program effectively for ps3 and many are now finding it easier to develop multi console titles using ps3 as the lead and working downwards. ps3 was designed for a 10 year lifespan and has yet to hit its stride. 360 will wind up releasing a new system to compete within 4 years and that system will require time for developers to fully design for while ps3 will of hit its stride. and as for price, the ps3 is quality built to last, is a high quality blu-ray high definition dvd player, and also has a hard drive. when you add up all the extras you buy for the 360 to make it comparable, 360 actually costs more, its not all packaged together and prone to breakdown. xbox live is a nice service but its not free like ps3 and once HOME is released this spring.. many things will improve service wise. i like the xbox 360 but the future belongs to sony
face it, the ps3 blows. find something else to talk about.
Ps3 rocks. No horrible red ring of death.
360 might have more games (now) But wait for mgs4 and gt5. Two of the biggest sony releases. not to mention Resident Evil.
Well, ps3 haters, the console war might take awhile, but sony isn’t dying in it.
And blu ray is going to win the hd war.
The thing about the XBOX 360 and the PS3 is that they are far too busy putting all their resources into being the most powerful console out there.
Nintendo Changed the game.
XBOX will hold strong to its position because it had a year to dig in its claws, but PS3 is going to find it hard to compete once the developers start really producing games for the Wii.
It may be true that the PS3 was built with the plans of lasting for several years to come, but since the release of the PS3, Sony has made some really bad choices. As an example, where was the logic in removing the backwards compatibility? backwards compatibility is one of the things that made the PS2 so popular, and it was one of the things that Nintendo actually took from Sony’s example.
Another thing that Sony had going for it with the PS and the PS2 was the vast vast games library. it seemed like everybody and their dog had a game out on the Playstation. Nintendo’s library has never been as vast (although the Super Nintendo had alot) because they wanted to monitor the audience the games were pointed towards, and XBOX wanted to make sure that all the games that were produced were all high quality games. Now thought, Sony seems to be a little more strict about their games, while Nintendo and Microsoft are loosening up.
oh, and I just have to mention, to all you PS3 fanboys out there who love their Sixaxis controller, guess how many axis a wiimote has. Six, just like the PS3. oh, and if I add my nunchuck, then there are 12. so stick that in your pipe and smoke it.
the backwards compatibility is still available for ps3 on the high end model, sony simply gave consumers a lower priced option. i have it on mine but dont care much one way or the other. also, the sixaxis is a minor feature in my opinion. it is not my consoles biggest selling point (lol), i wish MARIO was available for ps3 but thats nintendos only real must have game. nothing against it though, have fun.
i have a ps3 and a 360 in my apartment. but i’m going to buy a wii. why? no offense to sony or ms, but there’s only so many fps games i can take. i mean, halo 3, resistance: fall of man, cod4, etc are all pretty good games, but they’re all the same damn thing at heart, repackaged to make them look different. does it really matter how pretty they look? the actual game play hasn’t changed all that much from the days of doom and quake; a little more sparkle here and there, a little bit smarter bad guys, but you still just shoot anything that moves.
the wii may not have all the bells and whistles of the other two consoles, but nintendo knows how to make fun (and revolutionary) games. i don’t know about everyone else, but that’s what really matters to me: i want to play games that are fun. i don’t care if they’re dvd quality or 8-bit original smb status, the difference between a fun game and a not-so-fun game is the only thing that matters in the end, and nintendo constantly delivers.
btw, the sixaxis blows goat nuts in both usability and implementation. it’d be much better if they just kept the dual shock.
@ Eddie,
“the wii appeals to children and seniors but not particularly that coveted 15 to 45 demographic.”
I can think of many reasons as to why the Wii actually may appeal to that demographic.
1-17 year olds are most likely not on their own. Chances are they live with their family. The key here is the family– maybe they have younger siblings who want a Wii. Before you know it, the older sibling is coaxed into playing along! Also, it seems to me as if you left girls totally out of the equation. I know more girls who own and talk about the Wii than I do boys my age (that 15-17 range). Whatever the reason, whether it’s just because the games are less daunting, or perceived as being ‘cute’ in many cases, I have found this to be true. As for the boys– remember that Nintendogs commercial? The one where the boy playing the game (whilst looking rather rather smug indeed) opened his front door to find 3 girls, all with their own pink DS’s and Nintendogs games? You see what I’m getting at? It’s a chick magnet.
As for those who are a little older, there are yet more reasons for them to own a Wii. For one thing, I’m sure that it’s a hit at dorm parties. It’s also a great way to introduce Mom and Dad (and maybe even Gramma and Grampa) to gaming in a way that doesn’t scare them away. And what of their significant other, if they have one? Yep. Just as the casual, cute Wii games appeal to teenage girls, they also have something for the misses.
Now, for those older still, who are, say, in their late 30’s and early 40’s, it’s highly likely that they have children of their own. Now we come full circle. They’ve got 7 year old little Johnny, and the Nintendo Wii is the hot item this holiday season. If they can find one, guess what’s under the tree? Yep. Part of the draw of the Wii, to the parents, is the fact that they see it as being accessible. They can finally hunker down and enjoy some quality gaming with their son. This is one quality that Nintendo places a LOT of emphasis on, and for a good reason.
So, as Steve said, the Wii really does appeal to just about everybody.
What a lot of you are overlooking is the fact that the PS3 and the 360 are built on being very powerful, high-def graphics based machines, whereas the wii is built on accessibility and the new form of game play that gets the users involved physically, where no console has made this a main form of play for any consoles to date. Yes, the Wii has revolutionized the way the game is played, and will continue to thrive, but will only do so for a relatively short period of time, as it is not as graphically powerful as the other machines. At some point, the programmers are going to cap out the potential of the wii’s graphical ability, and it is going to happen a lot sooner than it will for the ps3 and the 360 because the hardware cannot take as much. One of the biggest selling points of ALL gaming hardware is the graphical ability of said hardware, and being that the ps3 and the 360 can handle more than the Wii, they will continue to advance, where the wii falls short. The only reason that the ps3 and the 360 don’t have the same form of gameplay as the wii, as an option for some games, is the fact that they simply can’t produce the hardware for it because of patent laws and the such. This doesn’t mean that this would never happen, because it is very possible for them to come up with different hardware and coding that would allow those machines to impliment the same gameplay form as the wii. The wii has a lot of potential, but the competitors have much more.
