I have an original 5G ipod video that i use everyday with 'Amarok', it's essentially 'plug-n-play' after you upgrade amarok to the most recent version. It is the closest thing to itunes on linux that i know of. (Came with openSUSE)

I really do like what apple puts out, because they do put out great hardware. i have a friend who still has an apple from the 80's.....granite he cant get anywhere close to online with it, let alone facebook, but the sucker runs well and pretty fast. However, apple smells money, and if you were in their shoes, and you saw a chance to make money.....would you do it? Bills have to get paid somehow.

Do wish apple would port iTunes to linux, of course, they may have also made a deal with micro$oft...i honestly dont know.

Now, 2 years later the times have changed: Apple should understand that a big part of their iPod customers indeed run Linux at home so a .deb or .prm next to a virus-attracting .exe would be in the benefit of everybody :-)

The only problem with Apple is now that there starting to dominate the market away from Microsoft they can kill anything else that gets in the way. Apple knows that we exist and the proof of that is that Apple Aperture is our on Linux. You can go to the Apple site and check it out yourself. I heard that Wine 1.0 is going to have better iTunes support. So I installed Wine and got iTunes 7.7 its kind of the same stuff that a Linux user will go through when installing iTunes your screen will blacken like twice and then it will start to work. Now that I installed iTunes I opened it up and to my surprise it started to work kind of well. Better than the previous versions of iTunes. I don't have an iPhone, but my iPod seems to work with it. Maybe Apple did something to this version that helps work with WINE, but then again I doubt it.

Well, Linux is more stable than Mac. It is also BSD based. Mac is a hybrid kernel of some sort. Based on Mach.

The point is 60% of the music market is the iPod. iPhone is stealing thousands of sales world wide. Many linux users avoid buying iPhones and iPods just so that they can sync with their device. Well why not allow them. You think that these users would want to? I am refusing to get an iPhone because I wont have iTunes on Ubuntu.

While you may be using Wine to try and run iTunes, there is a new native-to-Linux program that can sync the iPod now, Banshee. I'll admit, I haven't used it yet (though I will when I get home) but from what I've seen from screenshots as well as reading through a blog, Banshee may as well become the program for Linux users with iPods. It seems that Banshee still lacks the iTunes Music Store so iTunes via Wine is still needed for that. However, if you can give up using the online store (or if you don't use it in the first place!), then Banshee might be a complete replacement for iTunes. :)

Everyone has some interesting theories, personally I can only hope that Apple actually makes a iTunes application for Linux. I'm using Linux openSUSE, and it's a great OS, it's many times more stable than Windows XP which I used to use, and I've always been more of an PC guy so I would like to stick to Linux, but I can only cross my fingers.

You forget about the money that Apple makes from their music store. Linux users using the iTunes store would probably offset whatever effect upgrading to a Mac would
