I was able to install a Dell oem XP pro from inside windows on any machine. I just install win 98 and then install Dell XP from My Computer. You need to have a second hard drive installed or it will install a dual boot on one drive.

I passed this idea by my wife and she I couldn't do it. In fact she suggested that the letters would make very good kindling for the fireplace.

Real letters? As in hand-written? Maybe you could scan 'em (futzing out any personal details) or maybe just show us a closeup of a paragraph. I love handwritten letters! I used to write 'em in my day but with blogging and my tendency to write several pages (even my old hand-written ones were 5-6 pages) I type 'em up.

None of the PCs I use have floppies anymore but the one I was working on can not boot from a USB and I did not have a diag CD!

PS: My wife found a bunch of old letters from my military days up in the attic. None are written by me but I may go through and publish them on here. Not sure yet...

I might post the letter and then provide some commentary.

nngggguh! That's why I haven't tackled dealing with OS installs and hardware installations! You still have floppies? Dang. OK, I do as well but no more floppy drives! I'd have to do something like take a floppy to my mom's place to use her PC (I think she has a floppy drive) and then transfer the floppy contents to a USB drive.

I'm impressed by your wrasling that HD into submission!
