Eric asked me in the comments of The face behind the blog how I got into blogging. He is interested in blogging himself and is a bit of a writer.
One of the great things about blogging is that it is super easy to get started. There are so many free blogging platforms out there that you can just pick one and start writing. I do not suggest you go that route though. If you truly care about what you are writing about you should sit down and decide on a domain name.
HMTK.com was never meant to be a blogging domain but it became one last July. Well, it sort of became a blogging domain about a year earlier but I only wrote one post and then deleted the blog software a few months later. I was not yet ready to blog.
In July of 2006 I got the urge to start writing again. I started by writing a few simple and short posts and then moved some fiction pieces over from my old Geocities page.
I was mostly posting for the fun of it and not thinking to hard about what I was writing. My traffic numbers were still low. By low I mean "me, myself and I" were reading the blog. Slowly some of my friends started showing up and reading the blog entries, some even left comments!
Around the same time I started to get involved with the social
What I also found interesting was that many people took the content I wrote and published it on their blogs. I have no problem with this because I publish under a Creative Commons license that allows for this. I do have a problem when people republish and do not follow the license.
So, back to your question of How did you start with your blog? I just started. I loaded up a blogging package called Serendipty (don't do that, just use WordPress from the start) and started writing. I did not expect to become popular and I thought I would just do it as I felt the need and probably stop at some point in the future. My numbers were real low until I began joining other blogging communities.
Yeah, it's kind of a lame story but it's true.
As for tips and advice for you:
- Steve's blogging tips
- Write what you want to write - Even if no one else reads it you will be true to yourself.
- Don't be a digg chaser - Trying to be a breaker of news and thought is hard. If you are original in what you have to say and you have even the slightest grasp of the English language you will do fine. Don't sell out for empty traffic.
- Don't add advertising until after you have traffic - The only thing worse than seeing single digit traffic numbers is seeing $0.01 in your AdSense account for 6 months.
- Read the bloggers guide to etiquette - It's good to know the basics before you press the publish button.
- Leave comments on other blogs that are similiar to your own - By being a part of the greater blogging community will help you build relationships and attract more visitors.
- Guest blogging - This works on both sides. Offer others to blog for you and offer to blog for others. It helps expose both audiences to something new.
- Have fun - If you find writing becomes a chore, stop.
- Don't worry about traffic numbers - The quickest way to kill your blogging career is to obsess over your lack of traffic. If you write it, they will read it.
Any more questions?

Thanks for the post because I think that blogging is indeed kind of a mystery to a lot of people. Plus I think that I could stand to read about how to blog from others who have been doing it longer than I have.
I think that I sometimes am indeed a little bit self-conscious about my traffic numbers. Ah the burden I must bear. :P
Another thing for people to think about before they start is:
Why do you want to blog?
This might be helpful when they are trying to “be true” to themselves.
We don’t ask the “what do you want to blog” question around here ;)
Thank you so much for the post! It does sound like blogging would be a lot of fun, and after reading your post, I’m even more interested in it. I really like to write, though lately I haven’t been writing as much as I probably should, my friends keep telling me I should write more, and a blog sounds like it would be a great outlet for whenever I want to write about pretty much whatever happens to be on my mind at the time. I’m not too worried about how many people would read it, at least not right now, but as I get into it that may change. The main thing I’m interested in is simply an outlet for my writing, to give myself a chance to ‘flex my muscles’, so to speak, and to get some things on my mind onto paper, or in this case, digital ‘paper’. I do have a couple more questions for you though. One is, you mentioned Wordpress, and that’s probably where I’ll go, but I’ve also heard about one called Blogspot, or something like that, and was wondering if you knew anything about it. Also, you mentioned something about ‘Creative Commons license’. Is that something I would need to worry about, or is that something for in the future? All in all, blogging sounds like a lot of fun, and a great exercise (for me, at least) in writing. Thank you so much for all the advice and information! If I have any more questions, I know where to come to, and if I do this (and right now I am planning on it) I’ll keep you posted! You mentioned guest-blogging, and that sounds like it could be a lot of fun as well. Thanks again!
When you get ready to start let me know. I just started setting my dedicated server up and I can sell you some space at a reasonable price. ;)
Really? That’d be awesome! How exactly would that work? Would my blog be on your site, or would it be a separate site? I’d have no problems at all with it being on your site, if that were the case. I’m just not too familiar with using dedicated servers for blogs, is all. In some cases I’m really good with computers, knowledgable, but in other areas - particularly servers and networking - I’m an absolute idiot, lol! I’m thinking about starting up a blog sometime in the next week, I’m going to use Wordpress I think, like you suggested. I checked the site out and it looks pretty good, but then this is were my lack of knowledge comes in. If I wind up buying space from you, should I not go with Wordpress at all? PLus, I’m still trying to decide what my first blog would be about, I have a few things I want to write about, just trying to decide what would be the best thing to start off with…
Step 1: Decide on a domain name.
Step 2: Register the domain name.
Step 3: Let me know when the first two steps are done.
PS: If you just want to try a once a week guest blogging gig I can give you a chance right here. I’m a tough editor though. I made my kid get her own blog so she wouldn’t trash mine ;)
And now she has more traffic and has won accolades for her writing ;-)
LOL!…..with the domain name, that’s something I’ve been stuck on. I want to name it something that won’t pigeonhole me, something nice and general, as I want to be able to write about pretty much anything. I found out that my best friend’s wife has a blog, but hers is based SOLELY on the ‘game’ Second Life, and that’s ALL she writes about….but that’s another issue entirely. Either way, a chance to guest blog would be an incredible opportunity! It’d give me a great start in blogging, plus any criticism you can give me would be a great way for me to improve, find out what works and what doesn’t, what’s good and what isn’t, etc. I’m open to criticism, so feel free to be as tough a critic as you need to be. I won’t be able to improve otherwise! And thank you for the offer! Now that I’ve rambled for awhile on that, on to the pertinent info: what all would guest-blogging entail? Would I be given a topic to write about, or would I write about pretty much whatever? Either way would be fine. And how would I submit anything to you? I assume email. Would it need to be any specific format or anything? Let me know, because I think doing this would be an amazing experience, and a great opportunity as well!
Nice post Steve,
Much better than the junk posted on the host of blogger blogs that seem to have popped up in JC’s wake.
Seems like your site has exploded since you became a farmer!!!
Keep it up ;-)
Jez
Yes it has, I had to take on a few new writers to help me out. This week I am extremely busy with Girl Scout Camp.
