I just finished watching this one (Thank you Netflix) and I have to say I liked it... a lot!

The movie stars Nicolas Cage as Las Vegas magician Frank Cadillac (real name Chris Johnson) who just happens to be the real thing hiding out in plain sight. Julianne Moore plays a very obsessive FBI agent named Callie Ferris. Rounding out the main characters is Chris's love interest Liz Cooper (played by a very mature looking Jessica Biel). The supporting cast is good and there is a special appearance by Peter Falk.

The movie is based on the Philip K. Dick story The Golden Man in which a golden skinned mutant has the power to see every possible outcome of every possible action he does. Think of it as the computer Deep Blue living inside a person. The movie is not an adaptation of that story but a new story based on the ideas of the original story. Once you understand that you will better be able to enjoy the film.

The basic plot for the film is that agent Ferris is working on a case that involves a nuclear bomb being smuggled into the USA via a certain California port city. She has also been watching Johnson for a while and she thinks he has the power to see into the future. She surmises that if she had him around he could tell them where the bomb is. Though she does say some heavy handed things about the good of the many outweighing the freedom of the one she tends to be more talk than action on those thoughts.

The movie begins with Johnson doing one of his shows and then going to a nearby casino to earn some extra money using his special "two minute into the future" sight. While in the casino we are treated to the casino security forces talking about him and wondering how he is cheating. Johnson's voice narrates as he explains that he always keeps his winnings low in an attempt to avoid detection. Clearly this idea is not working as the casino security team is about ready to take him in for questioning when his spider senses warn him.

While trying to cash out his chips he catches a glimpse of a crime that is about to result in two casino workers getting shot. He intervenes and the chase is on. The next few minutes, as he evades capture in the casino, is a great indicator of just how useful being able to see two minutes into the future can be. I do not want to spoil how he gets out but it is just amazing to watch.

Johnson has a few run-ins with Ferris but he always does it during his future sights. By doing so he is able to learn what she wants without having to actually meet her. It is just prior to one such encounter, while he is playing pool with Peter Falk's character that we learn that he has gotten a vision of a girl he is supposed to meet at a diner. He knows the time of day but not if it is AM or PM so he goes there, twice a day, everyday, in an attempt to meet her.

Nicolas Cage and Jessica Biel

When she eventually does show up he pulls a bit that reminds me of the movie Groundhog Day where he keeps trying different approaches until he hits on what that works. They hit it off and head to Flagstaff together. No, they never make it that far.

It is about this time that the movie turns into an action flick as the people who have the nuke also want Johnson as they see him as a potential threat to their plan. I do not want to spoil the rest of the movie so all I will say is WOW!

Nicolas Cage is a great action star because he does it in such a nonchalant way. He does it in that, "what, you mean this is not normal?" way he did the National Treasure movies. Couple this with Jessica Biel (I did not realize it was her until much later) who pulled off a great job acting like a young woman with a real head on her shoulders, and you have some great chemistry between the two.

The movie is short, clocking in at a mere 96 minutes, but it is also very good. If you like "low key" action movies i suggest you check this one out.

Funny thing is that I used to look at Nicolas Cage movies as if they were crap but now I am finding that there is a certain something about the movies he makes that makes them very enjoyable.

Lizzy Caplan in Paramount Pictures’ Cloverfield - 2008

For months now I have been looking forward to the monster movie Cloverfield. I've seen the trailers, read the press reports and been generally upbeat about seeing it. No more.

The sad thing is that Cloverfield is a movie that I want to see. It is right up my alley. I love monster movies that follow the path set by Godzilla and his ilk.

I remember, back when I was a kid, sitting in front of the TV on Saturdays for the "Creature Double Feature". My brother even had the Godzilla with the flicking tongue and the fists that would fly through the air. Yeah, that Godzilla is still around even though he became a double-amputee years ago.

So, why am I not going to see Cloverfield? Shaky-cam.

Yes, Cloverfield is filmed in the horrible Blair Witch style of a guy running around with a camcorder. I have enough problems with FPS video games do you think I can spend 90 minutes in a theatre watching the horizon go all willy nilly as if some four year old was making a movie? Why I'd be puking my guts out inside of ten minutes!

I understand the "feel" the director was going for in using this technique but, you know what? Sometimes you lose audience when you use weird camera tricks in your movie making.

When I watch a movie I want to watch from the perspective of a fly on the wall. Or even an outsider looking in through a window. I do not want to watch a movie as if I were a fly on a wall looking through a window while a 90 minute earthquake takes place!

So, if you decide to go and see the movie by all means, enjoy it. I'll be home, yelling at my Wii as the camera angles change in the middle of a jump while playing Super Mario Galaxy.

Amy Adams in Walt Disney Pictures’ Enchanted - 2007

This weekend my family and I went to the movies. I wanted to see I am Legend but I was out voted. Instead we saw the new Disney movie Enchanted.

Enchanted is a new spin on the fairy tale story of the evil queen not wanting to lose her throne. Her stepson Edward, the prince (James Marsden), has been kept away from girls his whole life by the Queen's (Susan Sarandon) special henchman Nathaniel (Timothy Spall).

The movie opens with the prince wrangling a troll while Giselle (Amy Adams) sings in her home. Hearing the catchy tune the prince rides his horse to find her. At the same time Nathanial lets the troll loose to thwart him. After a quick action scene Prince Edward and Giselle meet up and complete their duet. finding that they are a perfect match they plan to be wed the very same day.

On her way to the wedding Giselle is taken aside by the queen and sent into the "real" world, where she spends a very rough first day before meeting up with Robert (Patrick Dempsey) and his daughter (Rachel Covey). She spends the night on his couch and awakens the next morning to perform a "working song" that attracts the local city wildlife to help her clean the apartment.

Idina Menzel in Walt Disney Pictures’ Enchanted - 2007

When Robert's long-time girlfriend Nancy Tremaine (Idina Menzel) shows up she just happens to walk in on Giselle, fresh from the shower, falling onto Robert in the hallway. A small fight ensues and Nancy leaves.

Robert takes Giselle with him to work (in an attempt to find a way to send her on her way) where she interferes in his job, as a divorce attorney.

Around this time Prince Edward and a talking chipmunk named (not Alvin, Simon or Theodore) Pip make the journey to the real world in an attempt to rescue Giselle. Nathaniel soon follows at the bequest of the queen.

Amy Adams in Walt Disney Pictures’ Enchanted - 2007

Robert and Giselle make their way through the city park where, wonder of wonders, Giselle's singing turns into a song and dance routine that goes from one end of the park to the other. Prince Edward hears her singing but gets run down by a group of cyclists and misses her. Nathaniel catches up with him and helps him go somewhere to recover.

Eventually Prince Edward does find Giselle, in Robert's apartment no less. Unlike the Prince, who is still an empty headed fairy tale character, Giselle has grown and requests that they go on a "date" before returning to their homes and getting married. The date culminates at the royal ball being held in our world. Robert and Nancy are also at the ball and Nancy is obviously perturbed when Giselle and Prince Edward show up.

Due to Nathaniel's continued failings the queen herself shows up to take care of matters in her own special way. Let's just say that the movie ends with two weddings, two book deals and a funeral.

My Thoughts

The movie was entertaining enough and fit for family viewing but I do find it very interesting that the character of Robert was so instrumental in removing the innocence of Giselle. When you step back and look at the movie you begin to realize that the only adult in the fantasy world is the queen while Prince Edward and Giselle are nothing more than innocent children. I put the ending of the movie on the same "disturbance level" as having Madonna play the part of the love interest for a ten year old boy as was done in the movie Arthur and the Invisibles. On the surface it looks sweet and innocent but when you pull back the curtain you are left with something that would result in a lengthy prison term if it happened in real life.

Users are saying
I was just taking a quick look over at Yahoo when I took this screen-cap. Users are saying???

What is going on over at Yahoo? They refer to their members as Users? Is Yahoo dealing drugs or something? Are they publishing film reviews from known drug addicts?

As for the movie, I am looking forward to seeing this. Because it is a family movie I may be able to convince my daughter to go and see it with us. The last movie I saw in the theatre was Bee Movie, which I loved.

UnderdogThis past week, I've been seeing commercials for a new live-action movie coming to theaters soon. No, it's not a new action flick. No, it's not one of the many new horror movies coming out soon. And no, it's not one of the thousand sequels coming out this summer. No, it's actually....Underdog.

Now, growing up I was (and still am) a huge fan of the Underdog cartoon. I've always loved the humor that runs throughout a typical Jay Ward cartoon, the absurdity, the artwork....pretty much everything! However, when I first saw the commercial, I thought it looked a bit goofy. When I realized it was an Underdog movie, I wanted to cry.

Why does Hollywood have such a penchant for taking great childhood cartoons and ruining them with bad live-action movies? Flintstones, Dudley Do-Right, George of the Jungle, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Inspector Gadget....each one a childhood favorite, and each one turned into a bad live-action movie. And that's just to name a few.

As a child, watching these cartoons, I wasn't sitting there thinking "Golly, I wonder what this would look like if it happened in real life?" Instead, I was sitting there, simply enjoying the cartoon, enjoying it for the inane action, the plot hole riddled story lines, and the bad animation. Apparently, simply enjoying the cartoon for the cartoon's sake isn't enough for some people, and so they have to take the cartoon and turn it into something it's not!

Granted, there have been a few successes when it comes to bringing cartoons to the big screen in a live format. Look at the current Transformers movie. Now, I haven't seen it yet (believe me, I will see it!!), but by all accounts, reviews, etc., it is absolutely an incredible experience. However, for every good Transformers, there's ten bad movies like Masters of the Universe (did we REALLY need Dolph Lundgren as He-Man?!)

You would think that the sheer volume of bad movies, bad reviews, bad numbers would discourage Hollywood from doing this sort of thing. Unfortunately the occasional blockbuster like Transformers only encourages them. Hence the Underdog movie. Hence the upcoming G.I. Joe movie that I've been hearing rumors of. Hence the endless parade of live-action cartoons that I'm sure we'll be subjected to in the future.

Remember the catch phrase "There's no need to fear, Underdog is here!"? Well, when Underdog is arriving as a computer-enhanced talking dog, teamed up with Jim Belushi, maybe there is a reason to fear...

My family is a big fan of Netflix. We get a lot of use out the service and turn around on DVDs is often under three days. Being a family of three and only using the two disc at a time option does have its share of problems so we have been thinking of upgrading to the three at once plan. Thinking about it made me realize something.

If I'm going to go to a three at once plan I would also like three movie ques. As it is right now my wife is the chief arbiter of what is on the que. Both myself and my daughter are free to add movies but my wife is the one who is on there most often so she does the majority of the movie juggling.

Why do we juggle? Because we are three and we only get two discs at a time. This means someone has to wait for their turn to open up.

Now, if Netflix had a Family plan that offered multiple movie ques I would be very happy. Each que could be set to have one movie out at a time and you would have no more problems with family members fighting over what is coming next.

Face it, a lot of family bloodshed can be avoided by doing this. I know I have been watching the incoming discs waiting for a particular item to show up for days. Only to find out later that someone moved the que around or otherwise messed things up.

It's not so bad when you are waiting on a single movie but I like to watch multi-disc anime series. I do not want to get disc four before I have seen disc three!

That's it, my suggestion. Have Netflix offer a special multi-que family plan. I'm telling you, it would sell like hotcakes!

There is a new movie coming out based on a Stephen King Book and it is the 1408 Movie.

Starring two of my favorite actors; John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson, this movie takes place in a haunted hotel run by Samuel L. Jackson's character.
The synopsis of the story is simple. John Cusack's character is a horror novelist who only believes what he can see with his own eyes. He has been writing books discrediting the paranormal and his next book is intended to discredit the haunted hotel. He plans to spend ten nights in the haunted hotel but can he even survive one?

I'm a fan of Stephen King books and some of his movies. I find the movies based on short stories always translate best. The longer stuff such as The Stand and Tommyknockers do not survive the cutting room floor and end up terrible. This one looks like it will be good. Because this is based off of the short story 1408 I have no doubt that it will make a good transition to the silver screen.

I can't remember the last real good horror movie I saw. Some might say that the third Star Wars prequel was a horror movie due to some bad acting but, I digress. To me, a good horror movie has to have a few things:

    What good horror needs

  • Good actors
  • Good story
  • Simple plot
  • A chance it could really happen

With this movie we have all of the above and I can't help buy be reminded of the effect Jaws had on me as a kid. Heck, I still don't want to go back in the water! Will this one make me not want to stay in a hotel?

Besides, it has Samuel L. Jackson in it! He's the reason people went to see the Star Wars prequels.

Watch the trailer and then take a look at the website for the 1408 Movie. The movie comes out on June 22, 2007.

So what do the rest of you think?

Shrek the Third

This weekend, my family and I went to see Shrek the Third. We enjoyed the first two movies in the series and the trailers looked good for the third one. That and we ran out of things to do over the long Memorial Day weekend on Saturday.

Let me tell you right away that the trailers I saw focused on about 5 minutes of the movie. I was expecting a movie all about Shrek and Fiona having a kid and it was anything but!

When I sat down in the theater to watch the movie I was not sure if it would be as good as the last two Shrek movies. Sequels have a bad habit of never being as good as the original, a third movie in a series often falls flat (Return of the Jedi anyone?)

The movie began rather slow and something began to occur to me, this is not the movie advertised to me.

That can often be the kiss of death for a movie. I remember when I saw the trailers for Bridge to Terabithia. I was expecting a Narnia knock-off (no I did not read the book before seeing the movie) and not the movie I got (which was far better). Why just this past week I saw a dreadful movie called The Fountain and the DVD jacket mentioned three different time lines and astronauts. I watched that movie and neither my wife nor I have any idea what it was about.

Shrek the Third did have some baby humor in the beginning of the movie when Shrek had a baby-filled nightmare. There was also some good humor during Fiona's baby shower. The actual baby humor did not come until the end. In fact, both my wife and I got a good chuckle at the end of the movie. In the last scene Shrek and Fiona are together in a now quiet house, they look at each other and say, "what should we do now?" If you are a parent than you know what they do next.

The core of the movie was about Prince Charming attempting to wrest control of the kingdom from Shrek. The whole time Shrek is trying to get someone else to become king because he does not want to be the new king.

There were two new voices added in for this movie. Justin Timberlake voiced the part of Artie and Eric Idle voiced the part of Merlin. What voice talent I did not realize was that of Regis Philbin, who played one of the ugly stepsisters.

Shrek the Third is an excellent movie. They did a very good job pulling off a third movie. If you have not seen it yet you should go and see it.

As a side note, the theater we went to had three movies playing, Shrek the Third, Spiderman 3 and Pirates 3. Notice a trend there?
