A short time ago my wife started to read blogs. She had no interest in reading mine at the time so I asked what blogs she was reading. I made a note of the blogs and promptly forgot about them.

Over time she began sending me email snippets from some of these blogs and the best one of the lot has to be Rockstar Mommy.

The blog is currently using Movable Type but she has stated that she plans to move to WordPress soon. The layout is very clean and the advertising goes down the right side. Strangely her Google ads always show PSA for me, was she banned and just left the code in place?

At the top of her blog she runs a flickr plugin that shows recent photographs she has taken. They add a lot of character to the blog and this helps you get right into the mood of her latest posts.

What she posted yesterday was a post about the Duggar family. You may not recognize the name but they are the family that has 17 kids and is still trying to make more. They also profess to be 100% debt free.

Before I talk about that post I'd like to point out that I greatly enjoy her writing style and wit. What I find somewhat confusing is how high her Alexa ranking is. She is not even in the top 100K yet her posts get tons of comments!

Back to the post about the Duggars...

The post is well written and humorous but what surprised me was the comments on the post. At my last check their were 225+ comments on this one post! Some were your basic one sentence comment but many were very long.

And you also know that she home schools these kids right? How can they possibly be getting the right kind of education? It's one thing to be an actual teacher and have 17 4th graders... but for her to not be a teacher and try and teach all those kids who are all different ages and at different levels. There's no way. You know those older kids are stuck teaching the younger ones.

Some people shared the opinion of Amber above and sadly it shows that some people still think that having a lot of kids somehow means you are stupid or an idiot. I find this rather alarming because nothing could be further from the truth. In fact another reader comments back with the following:

Both Duggars are college educated. I believe Michelle Duggar was an education major, but I could be wrong about that (I can't find a reference to her education on the net.) I live in a place where there are still one room schoolhouses. I don't believe it can't be done.

After reading through more and more of the comments I noticed a trend. The people from the mid-west or "Heartland" states looked at this as something that is not that far out of the norm. While those from the coastal states saw them as freaks.

My opinion is live and let live. If they are doing a good job raising their kids I don't care if she blasts out 17 more! They obviously have a system and it is working for them.

Either way check out the rest of the blog, not all of the posts generate such heated comments as this one did.

Why not head on over there and check out my selection!

The last of my new server problems has been fixed. I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that the last problem involved a port being closed. I made the fatal mistake of assuming that this particular port would be open by default.

So yes, everything is now alright in the world with me.

The first site to be hosted on the new server is my daughter's (and her friends) blog. I present to you Yellow Pole.

Amaze yourself at the speed of the new server. It renders pages in 0.15 seconds with 50+ queries at a time! Yeah, I know there is not much content on that site but, it's still fast!

What was my problem? The main problem had to do with DNS entries.

When you save a post in WordPress that hs been published or publish a new post some cron jobs come into play. These jobs hit DNS and then ping other blogs and services. Because I was having some DNS issues these cron jobs would hang and not allow WordPress to do much of anything. Once I fixed the DNS settings everything ran smooth and fast.

HMTK.com will be the last site to be moved off of the old server and onto the new. Mostly because it is the most important site I have right now. Important because I get my mail through it.

The face behind the blogDerek Wong of Going The Wong Way tagged me with the Face Behind The Blog tag began by David Airey.

Yeah, I copied that first line from my associate blogger Ms. Q but she didn't give me a choice. She summed it up so well I knew I could not write a better opening.

A lot of folks have asked me to post a picture of myself. Some even thought I did post a picture of myself in my entry: GENCON 2006: Yes, there are girls at game conventions but I am not to be found there!

In fact I am very active on the net but I'm not one for photographs.

SquirtyIf you go to BoardGameGeek you will find this cute little kitten as my avatar. I also use it on the Kenzer forums. It is a picture of my cat Squirty when he was a small kitten. He is now a 16 pound ox with long hair and lots of love. If you even look at him he starts purring and heads right for your lap!

MyBlogLog AvatarThis is the avatar I use on sites such as Netscape, Digg and MyBlogLog. It is a thumbnail from a picture I got from a friend. It has a very nice tag line at the bottom: "One weekend a month my ass!" I use it because I like it, I am thinking of using Squirty's pic everywhere though...

HMTKSteveIf you really want a picture of me you will have to settle for this. This is me as a Mii, get it?

If you were thinking of doing a Google image search to find a picture of me, good luck! Even if you use my full name you will not find a picture of me!

Just think, I could be anybody... I could be the guy delivering the mail. I could be the guy picking up your trash. I could even be the guy listening in on your phone calls!

Maybe one day I'll post a real picture of myself... maybe.

The only person I can think to tag would be Baron from Baron.vc.

RT over at Untwisted Vortex just tipped me off to this one.

If you go to Technorati and look at any blog you will find that the listing of who favorited that blog is no longer there. In fact, except for the Top 100 Most Favorited blog list there is no indicator anywhere of how many fans a blog has!

Could this be an attempt to stop the abuse of the popular blog list?

BoingBoing1

BoingBoing2

As you can see from the above two screen captures BoingBoing has 1,939 fans but, when you click on the link you go to a page with no fan information.

Could this be a glitch or something else?

For those who do not know, a few weeks back a few people decided that they could get their blog onto the top 100 most favorited blog list quite easily. At the time blog #100 had less than 100 fans.

This lead to a meme post that ran through the blogosphere at great speed. This post encouraged people to favorite a bunch of blogs and then add theirs to the list. The results are obvious. The top 100 Favorited blog list is full of blogs that were not there a few weeks ago.

Some folks even started writing scripts that would find all the people who favorited them and reciprocate automatically!

So far the Technorati blog is silent on this matter...

I have not done one of these in a long time! Partly because I have been busy but mostly because I'm just lazy.

    Links worth looking at

  • 10.4.9 + 1 = 10.4.10 But Don't Cut Off the Zero - Parislemon points out that even though Apple is great for making cool looking products they don't know basic math.
  • ClubPenguin: That’s a lot of herring - Club Penguin being sold for $500 Million!!! How does a site with no advertising and a user base of kids become worth so much money? I mean Digg has advertising and a huge user base of kids and that site isn't worth even close to $500 Million!
  • Got Rid of MyBlogLog - Baron gets rid of MyBlogLog and explains why.
  • Marketing Pilgrim is Looking for Additional Contributors - In true Web 2.0 fashion another big site is looking for free workers. Isn't that the business model Digg uses? Get a bunch of people to submit content and not pay them but recognize them with a top digger list... No, they dumped that... Well, at least this site is upfront and tells you that you are only working for "fame and glory, in lieu of actual cash". It's a good site and it could be a good stepping stone to paid work.
  • Super Mario Bros. Theme Song - Can someone explain to me how you can play two electric guitars at the same time with only two hands?
  • The Rights of Contributrs: 2.0 and "Free Speech" - Even though the web originated in the USA it has become global. Too many American web users forget that their laws end at their shores.

After reading Do Follow, D-List, and No No-Follow on Make Money Online Free With Court Growth For Persistent, Intelligent People. about the Do Follow plugin for Wordpress I decided to check it out.

Even though my top commentators list is set to spread the Google juice I did not know my comments were set not to. From this day forward every comment you leave on the blog will give you some Google juice!

I am still using Akismet (60K+ and counting) to fight the spam and I have to wonder if using this plugin will push my daily spam intake above 1K spam comments!

I just wanted to give a quick shout out to five of the blogs that I read often.

  • Jane May Blogs - Jane May is part of the writing team over at Career Ramblings. She uses her blog to talk about things that do not fit on the Career Ramblings blog. She does not update daily but she does respond to comments on a regular basis.
  • Diary of a Sane Man - My good friend Grim runs this blog and he is a bit of a punk. No, really, he has a mohawk and wears a lot of black. He writes some great video game articles but his language is a bit on the coarse side.
  • The REAL Ryan J. Parker - Ryan has several blogs going and this one does not get updated as frequently as it should. Still, he has some good content and I know he's there for me if I run into a PHP or mySQL problem.
  • Rose DesRochers - World Outside my Window - I met Rose via MyBlogLog. She blogs very frequently and a lot of her posts are just deep enough to make you think. Some of her content is not for those under 13.
  • Catch a Falling Star - Kelly posts almost daily on her blog and, like me, she covers a lot of random things. She has a lot of good things to say and she never gets into a heated argument via comments.

I hope you take a few minutes to check out these blogs. Some of them might appeal to you while others may not. I know my tastes in blogs are quite varied and eclectic so you may not like any of these!

As a further challenge, I would like to ask all five of the above bloggers to make a post listing five blogs that they read.

PS: If I did not list your blog, and you know that I read it, don't worry. I'll be doing some more speed linking articles in the future and I'll be sure to send you some link love then!
