I've noticed that my podcasts are often stuck in the "Downloads" iTunes folder in limbo (particularly if my hard drive fills up during the download. Then I can try to re-download the same episodes multiple times but after the download is completed, it stays in the "Downloads" folder, it never moves to the Podcast directory.

I usually have to close iTunes - go to the actual Downloads folder via Windows Explorer, delete the downloads and re-download them once more.

Still not fun.

Cheers
